Welcome address

Dear colleagues and friends,

On behalf of the anaesthetist members of the Club d’Histoire de l’Anesthésie et de la Réanimation (CHAR – the French Society for the History of Anesthesia) and also the members of the Société française d’Anesthésie – Réanimation (SFAR – the French Society of Anaesthetists) I have the great honour of announcing the XIth International Symposium on the history of anaesthesia which will take place in Paris in 2025.

Paris’s bid to host the conference was accepted by the international board during the last conference which took place in Kobe (2022), Japan. This marks a unique moment as the event has never been held in France before.

Since its foundation in 1999, the members of CHAR have made high quality scientific contributions in the field at both the national and international levels. The creation of archive sources has been boosted by the establishment of a website, www.char-fr.net which is consulted regularly and by the publication of texts recounting the history and heritage of our speciality.

The XIth symposium will be held in two locations. The first venue will be the historic situation in the Faculty of Medicine in the Latin Quarter of central Paris. The second will be in association with the SFAR annual congress which will take place in the Palais des Congrès at the Porte Maillot, a short distance from the centre of the city.
The presentations, at the heart of our scientific discussions will be accompanied by an exhibition organised in collaboration with the Inter – University Paris Library of Medicine (BIU Santé) and the Paris Museum of Medicine who are key cultural partners for the conference. There will also be other surprise visits.
We welcome you all to Paris in 2025 and shall do our utmost to ensure the success of the symposium.
To receive free regular updates out the meeting just register through the CHAR website.
Don’t forget to put Tuesday – Thursday 16th- 18th September, 2025 in your diaries!
On behalf of CHAR, may I send you our very best wishes

Dr D. Simon
President, CHAR
